Hello, I’m Nicolas, and I’ve spent the last 20 years studying in Singapore. As a student, I often heard teachers say, "Understand, don’t memorise," but I didn’t grasp what true understanding meant. I could recite Newton’s third law, yet still struggled with applying it to real problems. Everything changed when my Chemistry teacher introduced me to the concept of "first principles"—starting with the core foundations of a topic before tackling more complex ideas. This approach transformed my learning and led me to excel in Math and Science, earning a spot in my college’s honour roll five consecutive times and ranking among the top scorers in Chemistry. I will be enrolling in a local medical school next year. For the past year, I volunteered as a tutor for a Primary 5 and Secondary 1 student and they found the "First principles" technique to be extremely helpful in their understanding. They gained the confidence to tackle more complex problems on their own. Now, I’m here to share these proven techniques with you. Every single student is different. There are Chinese speaking children who are not so good at English, and English speaking children who are not so good at Chinese. To excel in English the students need to know vocabulary and form sentences to familiarize. All the grammar structure must be mastered well. To excel in Chinese, han yu pin yin must mastered well. Characters writing must know well. Science knowledge must know all the facts clearly.
