Experience
I am a tutor who chooses to be more like a peer, I like to get to know my students, their learning methods and the best ways for them to focus before diving into the material.
I used to tutor my classmates who were scoring C6, this was in Secondary 3, I had straight As for E-math and was asked by our teacher to help tutor the C5/C6 students, I printed worksheets based on questions found in our textbooks, and I got them to do past year papers from other schools, after that I would mark their work and point out their weakest topics so they could individually focus on their weak points. At the end of 5 months, they scored a range of A2-B4.
I also tutored my friend's cousin, she needed help with chinese, science and math (primary 3/4), I got her assessment books and let her complete weekly drills, she used to score band 3, but mostly because she did not know how to study, I think this is something most students feel. But I taught her study methods, like doing 1 weekly worksheet, doing daily math drills, reading sections of her science textbook, so everyday her knowledge increases, by the end of the year she was scoring Band 1 for math and science, and Band 2 for chinese.
I also tutored under Brahm centre, as a volunteer tutor. My student was in secondary 1, she was hardworking but the only problem was her careless mistakes. She would send me questions from her homework time to time and i would try to relate to what we had done the previous week, so she could recall her work and recap the methods for Math. Her grades increased from a C6 to a B4 after 4 months.
