Experience
I have gained meaningful and relevant experience through my work in private tutoring (2 years), working in tuition centres and one-to-one academic support, which has shaped my teaching approach and understanding of students’ learning needs.
I am currently interning (adhoc) with Articulate Ink Tuition Centre, where I assist with curriculum planning and lesson development. This includes helping to design lesson structures, prepare teaching materials, and select age-appropriate texts and activities. This experience has given me valuable insight into how engaging and well-scaffolded lessons are created, particularly for younger learners.
Previously, I worked as a Teaching Assistant at The Learning Lab, where I supported teachers during lessons and assisted students with reading comprehension, writing tasks, and classroom activities. Working closely with students in a structured tuition environment has helped me learn how to support children who may require extra guidance, encouragement, or confidence-building.
In addition, I provided one-to-one English support to a Secondary 4 student from July to October 2025, focusing on comprehension skills, essay organisation, vocabulary development, and exam preparation. This experience strengthened my ability to adapt explanations and teaching methods to suit individual learning needs.
Beyond teaching experience, I have personally been a tuition student throughout my schooling, which allows me to strongly relate to students’ perspectives. Having experienced tuition firsthand, I understand what students typically need from tuition lessons—clear explanations, patience, structured guidance, and a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. This helps me anticipate common difficulties and tailor lessons to better support learning.
My teaching approach:
- Structured and personalised teaching approach to ensure that each student receives lessons tailored to their learning pace and academic needs
this includes:
• Creating customised worksheets for each student based on their level, weaknesses, and learning style
• Incorporating engaging activities and interactive learning methods in the midst of the practice questions, to help younger students stay focused and interested during lessons
• Conducting the first lesson as a diagnostic session to assess the student’s current ability and identify areas that require improvement
• Designing future lessons to target specific weak areas, whether in grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, reading etc
• Using collated questions from assessment books and past-year exam papers to strengthen understanding and practice for each concept
I focus on:
- Building strong foundations in reading, writing, and comprehension
- Breaking concepts into simple, manageable steps
- Using clear examples and guided practice
- Encouraging confidence and interest in learning, not just academic results
I would prepare customised worksheets, simple exercises, and writing activities, drawing from my curriculum planning experience and teaching resources. I am especially comfortable working with younger children and enjoy helping them build confidence and positive learning habits early on.
Homework is also customised depending on the student’s needs and may include:
• Practice-based exercises
• Corrections and revision work
• A combination of both
for example: if the parent states that they would like me to focus on grammar and reading, for the first lesson i would create a worksheet that has every section (grammar, writing, vocab, sentence structure, reading, comprehension) but with greater focuses on grammar and comprehension. based on the first lesson (the student's learning style, attention span, weaknesses) i would then adjust the worksheet style and the structure of the subsequent lessons accordingly
- if the child has a weak foundation in grammar and can't do the grammar questions much without guidance, the next few lessons would have a much greater focus on grammar, with notes and practice questions for each sub-group of grammar every lesson
Also, i would provide feedback to parents via text or in person, updating them on the child’s progress and areas that require further improvement.
Overall, my combined experience as a tuition student, teaching assistant, curriculum planning intern, and one-to-one academic support provider has equipped me with a strong understanding of what effective tuition looks like and how to support students in a caring and structured way.
