I have been teaching for more than 30 years, including over 15 years in Singapore in a well-known International School. My specialism is Mathematics, where I have taught across the full age and ability range. I am particularly strong at IGCSE and IB SL teaching. At IB, I am also a senior member of the examining team for IB Maths AI at SL level, although I have also taught the AA syllabus for many years. My emphasis is on trying to link new maths to things students have done before - and highlight the "essentials" from the "rare extensions" to maximise success. I want to encourage through small successes, rather than demotivate through continual failure! Though I do not have teaching experience in terms of having paying clients, I have always been the one that my family members reach out to to tutor my many younger cousins. I have the experience in tutoring them for more than a year, mostly for primary school mathematics and the occasional english. I am most comfortable teaching mathematics, and I often start with finding out the students weak points before beginning proper lessons. For many younger students, most of their weaknesses come in the form of not properly understanding the question, which I do my best to train them to, without giving the answers. Another experience I had teaching was to teach my classmates the entire O level pure chemistry syllabus. Our teacher at that time decided that the best way for us to learn was to teach each other instead of being taught by the school, so our classes for 2 years were mostly just me teaching a group of 4/5 classmates, after doing my own research at home. Most people around me would describe me as an enthusiastic person that won’t think twice before helping others. I would say that I am a patient person too, knowing how I am when I tutor others. These qualities helped me to graduate as valedictorian in my secondary school and I believe will be transferable to tutoring.

I have experience as a peer tutor where I tutored my juniors in Math and Physics modules in my polytechnic. I would coordinate a date we would be free and guide my tutee through questions they do not know how to do. I familiarize myself with the content so I know the different question types and answer techniques needed to score. I would help them write notes, step by step guides and summary that they can easily refer to, to refresh their minds before the test. I also try to suggest study methods that could help them such as compiling a list of mistake they tend to make and the right way to do it. I managed to help my tutee get A for her modules.
