Experience
I recently graduated from Nanyang Technological University, and I have been teaching part-time for 6 years now. I specialise in teaching English and Creative Writing for all levels. I also teach Primary school Math.
My students upon embarking their journey with me, have all undoubtedly shown improvement in their grades. Some even improving drastically, from failing in their various subjects to eventually passing. Some even promoted from the normal technical stream to the normal academic stream. Some just need the extra push, from constantly getting Bs to finally As.
My teaching pedagogy is straight to the point - firstly, for all students to have a fixed vocabulary bank book (I find that it helps everyone irregardless of how weak or proficient they are in the language). My students will build on the book by taking down definition of words/ phrases/ idioms and build on it during my lessons. This book is an extremely helpful guide for students struggling with their writing, as well as for their oral examinations. Usually after my lesson, I will allocate 10-20 words/phrases together with their definitions for my students to memorise. I will then test them in the following week during lesson.
Moreover, not only does it help improve students writing skills, oral skills, and spelling, this book can also help hone their comprehension skills.
I’ll also brush up on my students’ basics, such as their grammar, sentence structure etc. Some, despite being in secondary school, still struggle with their foundations of the language. For students struggling with their foundation of the language, they generally write poorly in their essays/ compositions, as well as do poorly in the editing section (for secondary sch students).
Also, I’ll help to brush up my students comprehension skills. Generally for a sec 3 student, they are gearing up for o levels/ n levels and if you were take a look at past year o level / n level papers, examiners have a specific style of asking questions. Once the student is able to recognise the way the questions are asked and what is required of them, they will have a better understanding of how to answer the question. Also, some students aren’t aware of how marks are distributed. For 2 mark questions, some students only answer one part of the question and are only able to score 1 mark at most. Therefore, I teach my students to learn how marks are allocated for each question.
I have been extremely zealous about teaching and sharing the love for the language since a young age. I have taught students of different ages for 6 years now (Primary 2 - Secondary 5). I am motivated in putting in the work to comprehensively plan and cater the right teaching curriculum specifically for each student, as each student have different weaknesses and strengths. Teaching English is my forte, and helping and encouraging my students to love the language is my responsibility. :)
