Hi there! It's Hong Jim. I am currently pursuing engineering at NTU. I have a deep passion for math and physics. I have honed my skills in these 2 areas and am confident that I can help other students as well. I have 3 years of tutoring experience, in primary and secondary students. Tutoring students is one of the most fulfilling things for me. I have several students who've improved drastically after teaching them the shortcuts on how to spot questions and techniques to use based on pattern recognition, having a strong foundation in understanding the materials. An example would be a secondary 2 school student who was struggling with mathematics, achieving C5 in her exams. After working with her over several tutoring sessions, focusing on areas she felt were challenging, and reinforcing core concepts, her results improved drastically to an A2 in her end-of-year examinations. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of tailored, patient, and supportive learning methods and I look forward to helping more students not only improve their grades but love the subject and enjoy learning it.

Tutor experience - 5 years during my undergrad years: I taught a female student both English and Science from P3 to P6, and a male student English during his upper primary years. The boy was initially failing and later achieved a decent score for his PSLE. The girl's foundation in both subjects were initially weak. As we started the tutoring sessions since P3, it was much easier for her to catch up and did well during her PSLE. Teaching experience - I have been working with students with Special Education Needs in a mainstream primary school since mid-2018 (6 years till date). Hence, I've been exposed to the school's current curriculum and am aware of the requirements. To engage students with greater difficulties in learning, I ensure that my lessons are interactive and scaffolded to meet the pace of the student.

I have a few years of experience teaching primary school students to read and write as a part of a few volunteer organisations. The first was when I taught K2-P3 students to read as part of a reading programme, and the second was when I was part of a volunteer group, teaching underprivileged children to read and write and equipping them with skills to manage English in Primary 3 to Primary 5. These lessons were planned by me and other volunteers, and were conducted very interactively online due to the pandemic. I did see much improvement in my students nonetheless:) However, my biggest area of expertise as a English tutor I feel would be my understanding of how important practice is in acing English exams in primary school. I have still kept my own primary school compositions that scored 35 and above consistently as samples for students. I also got my own PSLE open-ended comprehension skills from getting a just pass at the beginning of my PSLE year to getting 15/20 to a 19/20 nearer to the exam, using some exam strategies that proved to be very, very helpful not just for me but for many people I passed on this knowledge too as well. My PSLE score was 271, with an A1 in all my subjects, with my English and Science both seeing a phenomenal increase in grades. I truly believe that although English seems like one of the most daunting subjects for Primary 5 and 6 students, it is one that can be quite easily aced with the right technique and lots of practice. I believe that I do have a plan for how this right technique can be employed by students without stressing them out too much, and I am very open to discussing the aforementioned technique in a free trial lesson, or on call with a student's parents.
