My passion for teaching is not immediate but is gradually build over time as a Polytechnic student. I find great fulfillment in helping my peers make sense of complex scientific and mathematical concepts. Through observing how they were able to understand and independently solve problems that were once challenging made my efforts meaningful. This rewarding experience paved the way for me to explore more opportunities to teach. Since then, I have been offering academic coaching for Primary School Mathematics and Sciences as well as Secondary school students in their Elementary Mathematics and Chemistry. As a tutor, I was commended for my resourcefulness in developing supplementary resources that are customized to their needs and for being able to simplify mathematical concepts using analogies and real-life examples. Through these consistent efforts, I was able to raise her Elementary Mathematics grades from C6 grade in secondary 2 to A2 in her GCE O’levels. For the past 8 years, I have also learned that the most rewarding aspect of teaching is not just about seeing academic improvements but also witnessing how my student have grown to take ownership and responsibility in their learning. For instance, I used to have a Secondary 1 student who was once unmotivated to work on his mathematics when he consistently fared poorly in the subject. Through working with him to identify specific math topics of his strength, scaffolding his learning by breaking difficult concepts down and seeking to draw math concepts to the real-world, I noticed improvement in his understanding and confidence in the subject. This progress was seen from a jump in his Elementary Mathematics grade from D7 to B3. More importantly, he is now taking greater initiative to clarify doubts and problems he faces. Through this experience, I have learned the importance of building good rapport with my student by customizing lesson according to their capacity so that they do not lose the motivation to learn at their own unique pace. In doing so, we also help foster independence in them to become self-directed learner. Beyond my role as a tutor, I was formerly a Special Education Teacher who have taught students with moderate to severe Autism. During the course of 1.5 years, I have undergone intensive coaching and supervision which have equipped me with effective classroom management and teaching skills. Furthermore, I was required to manage challenging behaviors of students which are not limited to temper tantrums and meltdowns which could arise during lessons. This exposure has effectively shaped my patience and resilience in managing complex emotional needs of student which can be more pressing to address on top of their learning challenges.

I presently teach students who aged 5-9 who are academically gifted, working with them on English and Math. I have a Early Childhood Intervention (Special Needs) certificate from NIEC. I have 7 years of teaching experience in an Early Intervention Centre working with children aged 4 to 6 with ASD, ADHD, and other forms of special needs. I am well-versed with the strategies that can help children with autism pick up concepts well. I have been teaching literacy, numeracy, social, adaptive and motor skills to children with autism, speech and language delay, learning difficulties, cerebral palsy, and suspected dyslexia and ADHD. I am able to use various teaching methods to break different concepts into smaller steps to help kids gain understanding of the skills better. I believe that the skills that I have gained in my time in an Early Intervention setting can help me connect to children in the mainstream environment better as I am able to use different and creative methods to make learning more engaging and motivating for all learners. I also have a P3 child who studies in Fairfield Methodist with special needs. I don't have their scores & final results since I've only worked with them for 2-3 months. But I do have positive reviews from parents. I also work with a child with dyslexia on phonics & he went from not knowing how to read or identify all the letter sounds at all to reading simple CVC words in a matter of 3 months.
