Experience
I have an experience for two years, each about a few months before N and O Levels where I have tutored a few students in various subjects and from there, I can say that the child or herself is the driving force to their achievement. I merely, as a tutor, provide the support and advice to the best of my abilities which in generality cannot ensure that the student's grades improve. I mainly would like to teach English and Creative Writing because that is my speciality. I am an author of three published novels and am pursuing Healthcare and the English language as my university subjects. Therefore, my methods would focus heavily on these two aspects in which your child can gain some knowledge into improving their work within one hour of every session. To add more support to my resume, I have won the prestigious Edusave Scholarship Awards for three consecutive years.
I do not believe in the usual method but rather a rational one that can ensure that the motor of their brains, their thinking and cognitive abilities can adapt and look into certain areas through understanding and a bit of practice. The mind cannot simply learn English through memorizing but by understanding and that is the key. I will, of course, need to understand each student's ability and ensure that what I put in for their tuition would be sufficient for their level of understanding and the improvements that they can make although not ephemeral but in the long run.
I could say that there are two categories that I might mainly focus although certain modifications might be feasible depending on the student. Both are adaptable to the education level that they are in.
The first category would focus more on grammar and vocabulary. I would want to make sure that they understand the basics first before tackling the difficult aspects of this genre. I would want them to know past and present tense, continuous tense, etc as well as new words through the use of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary which has many interesting and useful alternate words that the child can use in their writing. I also believe that reading is an essential tool for the student to understand the language and I do require them to borrow and read a chapter each week, summarizing the chapter in a writing format that they are comfortable with and highlighting new words that they could ask.
The second category would focus on the writing itself. The very core of every essay that is required by the student is to understand what is the subject that they are writing and what methods are appropriate. In school, they are probably teaching the basic technique but there are many more than just the basics that the student could exploit and explore. Although most of these are similar some unique ones can aid very well for those interested in creative writing.
History, I believe that if one is interested in history, one can truly do well. History is not about a model answer but the understanding of historical events and how it unfolds and affect the bigger picture. I love history greatly. I used to excel very well in History papers. The key is to have a love for the subject. Some may find it dull, but to understand you must embrace the ideas that unfold and if required, you may need to use your five senses to answer the question correctly.
