Experience
I taught in SJI (Independent) for 10 years, with students ranging from 13-15 years old. I primarily focused on teaching Lower Secondary Express stream students and students who were on the integrated track.
Under my tutelage, I've had students who scored Cs or low Bs attain high Bs or As. I've also had classes that topped the level in the class aggregate and classes with the highest number of students who were promoted to the next academic year.
My core teaching subjects were English Language and Literature, and my teaching experience in addition to classroom lessons included conducting enrichment lessons, structured tutorials/remedial, as well as lessons for external parties (e.g. primary school students and foreign students on exchange programs).
In my 10 years of teaching, I've ventured into Language Arts (integrating English & Literature) and experimented with incorporating drama into the teaching of Literature. Reading programs (which cover not only reading but also speaking and writing, through the use of various frameworks) are a staple in supplementing our curriculum because often, igniting students’ passion for reading often translates to better writing.
I’ve mentored and supervised countless students in formulating writing portfolios and coached students in their participation in external competitions (both speaking and writing). I believe that a love for reading can and will translate into a love for learning, and everything else will fall into place.
After leaving the service, I worked as a private tutor and have been doing so for 3.5 years. I’m currently tutoring a 10 year-old girl English Language and Mathematics.
In the past 2 years, I have given tuition for Primary 3, Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 English Language. The Primary 3 student topped his class and level for English Language and his composition improved so much it was selected by the teacher as a model composition.
3 years ago, I tutored a 9 and a 11 year-old boy from China English Language. As they had come to Singapore from China for only half a year, their literacy skills (reading & writing) was almost equivalent to preschool level. Hence I obtained a phonics certification to use it to teach them the fundamentals.
As a mother of 3 children, currently 9, 7, and 5 years old, I've build up my own literacy and numeracy resources and also attended coaching sessions and read up on curriculum to guide support my children in their learning in preschool years.
On top of obtaining a phonics certification in 2023, I completed a grammar course in 2024 to enrich myself further, and at the start of 2026, I attended an online Mathematics Conference to further equip myself with the pedagogy and strategies in teaching Mathematics.
I believe in constant learning and versatility as an educator, hence the range of ages and subjects I've opened myself up to.
More importantly, I believe in meeting each child where they are, so I customise and adjust my teaching methods and content according to the individual needs of each child. No one child receives the same teaching material or instructional strategy as I differentiate according to their ability, learning gap, and interest.
