I used to work as an editor for more than a decade before taking up further studies to become a social worker. Currently I am a registered social worker and with time to spare after work I felt it would be worthwhile for me to impart my English language skills to students as a home tutor. I also used to work as a support teacher for a year at Maris Stella High as well as a number of primary schools in the past - I am therefore familiar with the school setting and factor this into my tutoring by adhering closely to the curriculum. English has always been my favourite subject and its related etymology interests me to a great extent. I hope to demonstrate this affinity for the subject through my teaching. I am also an avid reader of English books (fiction and non-fiction) and discussion of books ie 'Book Club' is an integral part of my teaching. My pedagogy is highlighted by practice, practice, and more practice and which will prove to be a challenging but satisfying journey for those who aim to excel in the subject. I tutored a Sec 4 student previously who had not done well in O Level English (E8). He had never passed the subject before and barely scraped through from primary all the way to secondary school. Given that the course he wanted to take up in polytechnic required a better grade for English, he had no other choice but to retake the exam as a private candidate. Although I was confident of my teaching skills, I knew it would take a miracle for him to even get a pass as his grasp of the subject was extremely poor and we had only six months to get through the syllabus. Through sheer grit, he managed to score a C5 (his first ever pass for the subject during his entire scholastic life) and it is one of the memories I hold close to my heart. Suffice to say he managed to get into the course that he desired and is a successful accountant today. Every child is unique to me, and I would like to be a part of their growth and development in a safe and nurturing way.

I come from a hindi speaking home and have about 5-6 years of experience with a variety of students, ranging from P3 to P6 onwards. The first lesson I’ll take a short placement test to identify the student’s weak areas, after which i will provide customised materials tailored to student’s pace to slowly help them improve. I have been tutoring 2 P6 students hindi since they were P4 and they achieved AL2 (88) and AL3 (81) in P5. Currently tutoring 1 other P5 student as well so I’m very familiar with the syllabus and marking style.

I have worked at a tuition centre called Math Vision enrichment centre where I taught students from various educational background such as IB , IGCSE , A levels and also a few introductory coding lessons for university students. I also had the oppurtunity to teach web development using Flask and Django to a few students who requested for it. As a full stack developer, I found this enjoyable and rewarding. Moving on to university where I will be studying computer science, the experience from tutoring will also help me as a student by allowing me break down concepts to simpler blocks just like I do with my students. Moreover , I had the oppurtunity to create new assessment plans and homework for students for them to reinforce their learning. I am also working as an AI intern at a startup currently
