Through my fondness of teaching, I previously taught young students (under 12) Block-based programming in a tuition centre (such as Scratch & MIT App Inventor) where I prepared the course materials from scratch as teaching programming is a relatively new subject. Teaching Experience: I was an MOE teaching scholar from 2009-2012 and have significant experience teaching O & A level Math and Physics classes previously at Little Professors Tuition Centre (Marine Parade) and Budding Minds Tuition Centre (Serangoon Gardens), as well as private tuition for A level candidates in Physics and Math. Education: I graduated top of my class from NTU Physics with a CGPA of 4.99/5.00 & was awarded both the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal and Koh Boon Hwee Scholars’ Award. I then did my PhD in Neuroscience at University of Oxford followed by further research training at Harvard Medical School. Hence, I have extremely strong competencies in Math and Science. Pertinent to this application, I scored As in my A-levels Math as well as distinction in S-paper Math. Additional information: I have been engaging in tuition teaching from 2007-2013, but was away from Singapore from 2014-2020 for my postgraduate studies. Hence, it has been a while since my last tuition assignment in Singapore. However, I have been catching up on the O and A level Math syllabus for the past two years and am highly confident that I will be able to guide students towards their desired grade if given the opportunity.

Ms Yvette is an ex-MOE teacher with 7 years of experience teaching English and Science. Most of her teaching years were spent teaching at SCGS Primary where she was also a coach for the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Competition and YMCA Plain English Speaking Competition. For FPS, her students qualified for the national finals and one won Best Writer in 2020. For the Plain English Speaking Competition, one of her students competed in the finals. Ms Yvette's graduate background is in the Sciences. She holds a Masters in Science Communication and a BSc with a double major in Zoology and Conservation Biology. She was a trained facilitator for the E2K Science programme (Excellence 2000), offered at SCGS Primary for high ability students with good collaborative problem-solving attributes.

I am an A level graduate from JPJC. I do have experience tutoring my cousins and friends who shared academic difficulties in primary and secondary school subjects such as Math Physics Chemistry and Tamil and helped them improve in their subjects by grades. Ive always shared deep interest in teaching people as my teaching style is to instill deep conceptual understanding and connect the concepts with real-life scenarios to better understand the subject. This way the subject will be easier to study as foundational understanding is important. And furthermore I venture deep into their knowledge and clear common questions and doubts that hinders them from understanding the subject deeply.

I used to work as an editor for more than a decade before taking up further studies to become a social worker. Currently I am a registered social worker and with time to spare after work I felt it would be worthwhile for me to impart my English language skills to students as a home tutor. I also used to work as a support teacher for a year at Maris Stella High as well as a number of primary schools in the past - I am therefore familiar with the school setting and factor this into my tutoring by adhering closely to the curriculum. English has always been my favourite subject and its related etymology interests me to a great extent. I hope to demonstrate this affinity for the subject through my teaching. I am also an avid reader of English books (fiction and non-fiction) and discussion of books ie 'Book Club' is an integral part of my teaching. My pedagogy is highlighted by practice, practice, and more practice and which will prove to be a challenging but satisfying journey for those who aim to excel in the subject. I tutored a Sec 4 student previously who had not done well in O Level English (E8). He had never passed the subject before and barely scraped through from primary all the way to secondary school. Given that the course he wanted to take up in polytechnic required a better grade for English, he had no other choice but to retake the exam as a private candidate. Although I was confident of my teaching skills, I knew it would take a miracle for him to even get a pass as his grasp of the subject was extremely poor and we had only six months to get through the syllabus. Through sheer grit, he managed to score a C5 (his first ever pass for the subject during his entire scholastic life) and it is one of the memories I hold close to my heart. Suffice to say he managed to get into the course that he desired and is a successful accountant today. Every child is unique to me, and I would like to be a part of their growth and development in a safe and nurturing way.
