Experience
I taught H1, H2 & H3 Biology in schools such as DHS and VJC from 2014 to 2022. I have much experience performing ‘rescue missions’ for struggling students as well as guiding top students who wish to learn ahead or even beyond the syllabus. My techniques are especially useful to anyone seeking to learn Biology more efficiently (i.e. study ‘smart’). This means that I am the type of tutor who can value-add to any student.
As an experienced teacher, I am familiar with the common mistakes and misconceptions made by students, as well as the answering and studying techniques necessary to do well for A-Level Biology. Much of these knowledge were attained from marking thousands of questions/scripts and analysing feedback from hundreds of students. This is something that many PT/FT tutors (and even some MOE teachers) would not have experienced.
I have my own customised notes and training materials. These were highly sought after by my former students as they make complicated concepts easier to understand and contain useful information that cannot be found on the Internet. In addition, I have specially crafted additional topics to address certain concepts that are often neglected by most MOE teachers. Due to my level of expertise, I am also able to spot and correct mistakes made by other top JCs, TYS and even Cambridge themselves. All these make me well-suited to meet the needs of those who are looking for a competitive edge over their peers (even those with MOE teachers as their private tutors).
I also have my own exam-grade microscope and slides. This enables me to continue preparing students for their practical exam during the embargo period (near the practical exam), giving my students a distinct advantage over their counterparts (who will not have access to the labs). With my materials and expertise, I can provide comprehensive training for every paper and topic in H2 Biology, even if the student is a private candidate without a school (e.g. students who want to repeat the A-Levels to get a better result).
I personally attended the Cambridge International Education Assessment Lecture and Workshop for A-Level Biology, so I am familiar with how Cambridge set and mark their papers. This makes me one of the few who knows the differences between the way Cambridge examiners mark the A-Levels and the way MOE teachers mark their school papers. This also means that I am privy to information that are normally withheld from students. This is yet another advantage that my students can tap on, especially for those who are concerned about whether they are ‘learning the right things’ from other tutors.
My pedagogy prioritises the mental well-being of my students without compromising on resilience. Over the years, I have received many positive feedback regarding my teaching style and motivational talks, even from students not under my direct tutelage. Additionally, I possess a stellar track record that few can match. Details regarding my track record, teaching style and student testimonials are available on request (email: drhowgj@gmail.com).
NOTE: I can offer online sessions via Zoom and/or F2F sessions at my home (near Eastwood Centre). However, I am unable to accept any assignments that require me to travel beyond my home.
Also, those on a limited budget can consider gathering friends for group tuition (max. 3 per group for F2F sessions, Zoom only for 4+ students).
