Monica is a trained educator, facilitator and pedagogy expert who crafts and delivers various English Language and English Literature programmes and designs curriculum for schools, tertiary institutions and adult educators both in Singapore and regionally. Prior to working as a professional Teacher Educator and Facilitator, her last appointment with the Ministry of Education (Singapore) was Head of the English Language and Literature Department at Cedar Girls' Secondary school. Monica was awarded a full scholarship by the National Institute of Education (Singapore) to complete a Master’s Degree by Research in Applied Linguistics in 2006. Upon completion, she moved on to teacher education and consultancy and worked closely as lecturer and practicum supervisor on various courses for the English Language and Literature Academic Group, National Institute of Education. In 2010, Monica started her own preschool centre in Medan, Indonesia, and later in 2016, she founded Words Worth, an English Language and Literature enrichment centre and a one stop education portal for teachers and students in Singapore (monicamenon.com). In her role as a leader in education, she has provided many educators and fledging school leaders with professional guidance and personal development, though effective mentorship programmes in order to ensure they are able to carry out their pedagogical skills and curriculum design effectively. She has worked with the British Council (Singapore) to develop their primary and secondary curriculum materials in 2016 and 2017 and with Cambridge Assessments (Singapore) to deliver English Language seminars to teachers in the Southeast Asian region. Between 2013 and 2017, she authored an upper secondary comprehension book “All About English: Lower and Upper Secondary Comprehension” (with Hodder Education) which is currently being used in more than 15 schools in Singapore. More recently, in 2020 she was involved in the production of the Cambridge Checkpoint Series (Stage 7 to 10) for the World English Series, also with Hodder Education, and the Student Companion Materials for the new Primary English Language, 2020 Curriculum with Marshal Cavendish. In 2022, she was asked by Cambridge English to head a project to design an English Language teacher training programme (TKC) for Southeast Asian ESL teachers. She delivers good results in English Language and academic writing. Parents have been very pleased with their children's progress and engagement in her lessons. Many parents send their children for DSA coaching and personal statement writing to her.

Over a span of 6 years, I taught at Red Swastika School, Eunos Primary School, and Changkat Primary School. As a former MOE teacher, I’ve always made it my teaching maxim, “A day without learning is a day wasted.” Hence, in identifying a student’s learning needs is imperative in my tutoring approach. What ensues is I will impart to them the knowledge, techniques, skills and strategies needed to improve their English. Along the way, I will also inculcate in the students the values of respect, perseverance, responsibility, commitment, integrity and diligence. Being a full-time tutor as a former MOE teacher, I've taught primary, secondary, and junior college English for over 20 years in various settings such as a public school, an established tuition centre (JustEdu Tuition Centre), the students' homes, and an online tutoring platform. In addition, I'm a former Reading Specialist with I Can Read and a published author of a children's storybook. By the way, I also hold a diploma in TESOL from London Teacher Training College and a certificate in Teaching IELTS Preparation. Over a span of 20 years, I have taught an enormous number of students, and most of them have scored an A from C in the beginning or even an A*. The students' excellent improvement in their results could be attributed to their due diligence and conscientiousness, as well as the unflagging support of their parents in the learning journey. Most importantly, they readily applied the strategies, techniques and skills I had taught them in their exams. To add to my credentials, I’ve been the former editor and writer of Kaki Bukit Community Centre’s newsletter with a posse of writers under my charge for several years on the volunteering front. For the tutoring part, I do provide supplementary materials to students according to their learning needs discretionarily. Having said that, I believe the key factor in mastering English is helping students to see the elements of fun and joy in learning it.

Currently I am teaching at GRACE OASIS COUNSELLING SERVICES as an English teacher. I was also an adjunct teacher at these schools: - CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL (SEC 3), SCHOOL OF THE ARTS (SEC 2), PAYA LEBAR METHODIST GIRLS (SEC 1) , HOLY INNOCENTS’ HIGH (SEC 2 AND 4) AND DEYI SECONDARY SCHOOL (SEC 1), DEYI SECONDARY SCHOOL I was a secondary school teacher with the Ministry of Education for 5 years before leaving to pursue a Masters in Counselling. Upon graduation and obtaining a Masters of Arts in Counselling, I worked with Feiyue Family Service Centre as a counsellor and trainer. As a trainer, I conducted workshops for couples who were intending to get married but underaged. I also carried out training sessions with transnational couples. These trainings took place mainly over Zoom during the pandemic. It was rewarding building rapport with my participants and getting good feedback from them. I also worked as an adjunct lecturer at the Singapore Polytechnic School of Life Skills and Communications for a year. I conducted lessons on effective communication and interpersonal skills to polytechnic students. It was enriching teaching these students as they were eager to learn and found the topic applicable and beneficial. Most recently, I ended my one-year contract as a Flexi-Adjunct Teacher with a local secondary school to focus on my family. I am passionate about working with youths and young adults and am comfortable with public speaking.
