Experience
I spend most of my life in Singapore, where having to grow up in a vast knowledge-interconnecting country set a good foundation for me to satisfy my thirst for knowledge. Subsequently, it stimulates my yearning to understand how our body works and compel me to study life sciences. During my undergraduate year (Major in Life Sciences, Specialisation in Biomedical Science, Minor in Geosciences, First Class Honours) at National University of Singapore, I was a recipient of the NUS Kent Ridge Undergraduate Scholarship and was on Dean's List in the Faculty of Science for four semesters.
Additionally, I was also working as a private home tutor. I had tutored eight students from secondary schools or junior colleges (from 2011 to 2014). As a private tutor, I could customise and accommodate my lesson plan to adapt to the learning style and pace of the individual student. Furthermore, I liked to motivate my students in their studies to work towards their future aspiration and the combined effort paid off when my students improved. Similarly, I also volunteered to mentor my undergraduate juniors in life science modules where all of them gave positive feedbacks and thus, encouraged me to go into a teaching career. Hence, I decided to become a full-time teaching assistant at National University of Singapore to teach life science modules to undergraduates (from 2015 to 2017). Currently, I am working towards becoming a better teacher.
As of now, I have taught several JC biology students, from MJC, SAJC, CJC, YJC, RJC and SRJC. Under my guidance, most of my students improved, with the best grade improvement in H2 Biology from 'Ungraded' to 'A' for GCE “A†level examination within six months.
I have also taught secondary biology at Presbyterian High School as an untrained contract teacher and give tuition to “O†level students from various neighbourhood secondary schools. Most of my secondary school students improved under my tutelage, with the best improvement in Pure biology from 'D7' to 'A2'.
I provide my own tutorial questions to train my students to think critically. Additionally, audio-visual aids like using PowerPoint slides, providing handouts, showing video clips to emphasise essential points, and using other software (e.g. Socrative, Padlet, Google Classroom, etc.) are effective learning tools with proven impacts.
