I have spent more than 300 hours working as a volunteer tutor at a family centre for children from low-income background in the years 2017-2019. I started with a pair of siblings (K2 and P6), sometimes both in the same session, so I have experience teaching siblings with a wide age gap and differing needs simultaneously. I took the younger sibling through their transition from pre-school to primary school with a focus on improving competency in Mathematics and English. As for the older sibling, I focused on PSLE preparation for Mathematics, English, and Science. I also substituted for 6 months as a private tutor for siblings in an International School (on behalf of a friend) mainly focusing on improving their English skills and helping with their homework. My methods involve studying trends from past year papers to analyse the patterns, and then formulating a list of question types (with their variations) so that the student can train for most scenarios given in a paper. I will then keep track of which areas a student is struggling more in and personalise the practice questions to fit them better. From my experience working with children who are struggling in a subject, I find that it is more important to focus on improving their scores in the beginning before trying to develop a deeper interest in the subject as kids are much more willing to learn when they have built-up their confidence and feel smarter. As for my own academic background, I have always had to work hard to achieve my grades and that is why I feel I can understand what is going on in a child's head when they are confused better than someone who is naturally gifted. I can draw from my experiences to explain complicated concepts and empathise with children who feel defeated by a subject. I am also currently completing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and have had a lot of informal experiences growing up trying to help friends, especially when it comes to the Maths and Sciences.

I have one year of experience teaching Primary 1 and 3 Mathematics. I started off in December 2021 on a part-time basis when I was still a university student. Despite holding a full-time job in a bank as an analyst, I'm very devoted and committed to students outside of lesson time so that they do not have to wait till the next lesson to seek help. Both my students have been slightly weaker in their math foundation since young. However, after one year of tutoring them through building up their foundation, their grades have improved significantly from Grade 6 to Grade 4.
