WangXi, AEIS student who got into Queensway Secondary then HCI (for A’ Levels):
Thanks Ms Pat for teaching me with so much patience! You have taught me English for 3 years and I have improved so much! When I first arrived in Singapore, I was worried because I could not understand what people were saying. I had studied English in China but spoken English was too fast. You used fairy tales, simple news articles and song lyrics to help me get used to speaking, thinking and then writing in English. When I got into Queensway, I was relieved and continued learning from you, how to write argumentative and discursive essays. I have managed to get into Hwa Chong with your help!
Xinyao, DHS, currently studying Mathematics in NUS:
I feel really lucky to meet Ms Pat. She ignited my passion for GP. She reads widely and has a deep understanding of current affairs so she could always show me multiple facets of a problem and furnish me with new insights into events happening around us. More importantly, she is an articulate and logical person and is able to make her points easily understood. I did not like politics in the past because it was too complex and I always felt confused by it. However, with her explanation of the backgrounds and implication of events, it appeared much easier to me and I started to see how interesting it is.
Usually we would discuss essay questions or newspaper articles in class. Ms Pat would ask what I thought about them first and then complement it with novel ideas. I like this way of learning because from the discussion, not only have I learnt the content but also improved my own ability to construct thesis and draw examples to substantiate it. Ms Pat would also recommend relevant readings regularly to help me build my content.
Moreover, Ms Pat is very earnest and diligent. She was more than willing to mark every script and paragraph I sent her and always gave detailed comments. I still remember how impressed I was when I saw the comments which were almost as long as my writing. Her markings and comments were really helpful in helping me understand my area of improvement. Furthermore, she was always there when I needed help and I could always get timely feedback from her whenever I had a question about GP or English language and texted her after class.
Words cannot express how thankful I am for her guidance and help. I think my biggest takeaway is beyond the GP subject itself - I have learnt how to read and developed a habit of reading; I have learnt more about the world so I am more determined in my life. I guess that is what GP truly is and Ms Pat indeed teaches me that. :)

ZhongYun, Zhenghua Secondary 3 student:
Thanks a lot for helping me transfer from NA to Express stream. I don’t like English in school because it is hard and boring. Thank you for finding interesting books for me like Shadow of a Fox, Flowers for Algernon and others and teaching me how to write compositions!
Alicia, RI, currently studying Economics at LSE, UK:
Thanks so much for teaching me H2 Lit (Frankenstein, St Joan, The Tempest, unseen poetry etc)! I really enjoyed our classes and your analysis of prose and poetry was very useful in helping me score! Each week you would send me a couple of poems with your own annotations and exposing me to so many different poets and writing styles has really made me improve. I really appreciate it Ms Pat. Thank you very very much for your kindness and guidance!
