Qualification: NIE FlexiMasters in Curriculum Development & Design (NIE-Trained), A levels (highest relevant qualification) University Degree: Bachelors of Business (SMU) Relevant Schools Attended: Nanyang junior college, a Swiss cottage secondary. University: Singapore Management University Relevant Grades: O level: English A2, A level: Gp B Current occupation: -NIE-Trained - Curriculum Development & Design -Adjunct Teacher cum Lecturer (SISH) - Singapore International School of Hospitality - IELT - O Level Equivalent -Full Time Performance Educator (Tuition Centre - Principal of Centre is an ex-Curriculum Planning Division Officer of MOE) -10 years of teaching experience (I currently conduct classes at an established centre, having undergone training in Curriculum Development & Design Training at NIE to develop a deeper level of understanding of how SEAB develop exam curriculums for the O and N levels along with how examiners set the standards for students to score distinctions) -I currently also teach at a Private Education Institute for the Diploma and Bachelors Degree courses recognised by the Committee for Private Education under the Ministry of Education, Singapore -I have been helping willing students try and proceed from a fail to a pass grade and then to a B and above in the fastest time possible with unique strategies to prepare for tackling the paper which are further augmented by the learnings under NIE. Should there be sufficient runway to the exam, I would dive into the Grammar Fundamentals along with the skills of Language Arts (English applications and its Literary devices) for the students and ensure they are aware of what to look out for to allow them to have an incremental boost to their language marks as per SEAB’s expectations and requirements for students. Language arts are usually taught in the top schools in Singapore (ie. RGS, MGS, RI, HCI), and usually missed out by the neighbourhood schools. Yet in the O level English exams, language arts applications are critical to tackling the higher level comprehension questions that differentiate the As and high Bs from the low Bs and Cs. This is one of the reasons students from the “rainbow” schools do better than the national average for the final exams than the rest of the cohort. My classes hence give your child a glimpse into the inner workings of what students from these top schools are learning to broaden their mind on the subject of English for the O and N levels to score and do better than their peers. To be the best, you have to do what the best in Singapore does. Track Record: Student Names: Jason & Michelle -Taught 2 students English in September 2014, 1 in P6, the other in sec 2. He is now working to further his foundations to strengthen his language. Teaching Philosophy: As a Performance Educator, the aim for me is to teach my students on how to improve in the fastest way possible, hence I have helped many students who are failing English to pass it and then improve to a B and more if the student had sufficient runway to do it. (Foreign China students I took who had an extremely poor grasp of English have gotten a pass in the O level within a few months) This is done by teaching them different strategies and key points to take note of to tackle the paper. Not only that, I will also teach and emphasise on building their understanding on the marker’s psychology so that by consistently putting themselves in the shoes of the paper setter and the grader, they will know their “enemy” intimately and do what is needed to give them what they want to score. The rest of the lesson plan towards the exam is to practice these strategies to tackle the different papers and to also refine those strategies to the needs of the students to allow them to better improve their capabilities in the subject taught. The lesson plan is set out to cycle between the different components of the English papers every week, from Oral to Essay to Comprehension and Summary. More focus will then be provided to the student on the components that the child is weaker on while ensuring that he / she does not lag behind in the other components using such a cycling method. Moreover, if there is a substantial runway, I will help students work and drill on their English fundamentals (Grammar Foundation & Language Arts - Comprehension) This is to ensure that they know what are the different grammar laws that they have to be sensitive and aware of to greatly improve their English standards. I too strongly believe in the notion that "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." I emphasize heavily on the importance of planning to my students so that they would be clear on the steps and strategies to apply for the examinations in each component of the paper, and hence be in “the zone” the minute the invigilator says "You may begin”. ~Tuition Centre materials (where I teach), curated worksheets and homework of the latest syllabus done by MOE- Curriculum Planning Division are all provided. Students do not need to buy any assessment books. Tuition Fees already includes printed notes and material costs (ie. Curated questions, prelim papers and the necessary notes). Students do not need to purchase their own materials. ~A student Feedback Report is provided to the parent every month to ensure the parent is kept in the loop on the progress of the student.
