I have been tutoring students since completing my A levels at the end of 2011. Subjects I have taught include primary level creative writing, primary and secondary English, IP language arts and literature, JC GP and English as a second language. In my experience, improvement in grades depends very much on the individual student's willingness to practice. Some of my best students improved from fail to B (IP English), B to talent programme (IP Literature), fail to A2 and to B3 (O level English). My method of teaching is to equip students with the skills for them to learn independently. I am strongly against spoon-feeding. I will give hints and ask leading questions instead, because I want my students to go through the process of critical thinking and arrive at conclusions on their own. To get the most out of engaging me as a tutor, students should read articles I send them and be ready to discuss during lesson time. Students should also keep a journal (electronic or hard copy) of mistakes they have made, for me to periodically refer to and test them on. I generally assign minimal or even zero homework, unless parents request for more. For students learning English as a second language, I may include fun activities such as translating movie scenes or playing Taboo to develop interest in the language.
