My role in teaching started during my National Service when I was posted to the Singapore Armed Forces Basic Military Training Center as an instructor and section commander. During this time, I teach my recruits soldiering skills such as weapon handling, military knowledge, regimentation and discipline. I also make myself available to help those who require further assistance in their learning. After doing so, my recruits have been able to pass their assessments with ease. From my experience in the SAF, I wish to develop myself further in becoming a tutor so that I could expand my teacher/instructor capabilities to other industries. My goal is for my students to understand the topics that they are learning, and help them build confidence to score good marks in their tests and exams.

I am currently teaching lower primary students from primary 5 to 6 at a volunteer center, and I have been teaching them math and english subjects for around 6months. These students are from low income and difficult families and have very little interest in studying, hence it really takes time and patience to teach them. But overtime my students have shown some improvement in their understanding of the question, since we give them a mini quiz at the end of the month. My interest lies in math and I like to teach concepts of a math question to students and find different ways to solve a question, rather then simply giving them a model answer or fixed structure to follow.

Tutoring Experience (in years): 8 years Brief description of your experience: I have taught at a tuition centre in Parkway Parade since March 2016, mainly focusing on A level H2 Chemistry. Past students, including those from home tuition, include MJC, RVHS, DHS, VJC, ACJC, TMJC and NYJC. Grades achieved by students range from A to B. From Jan 2020-April 2020, I was a teaching assistant for a Year 3 Chemistry module (class size of 33), facilitating in-lecture discussions and conducting biweekly tutorials. As I pursue my graduate studies, I remain committed to nurturing the next generation of students. From 2021 to present, I have served as a graduate teaching fellow for undergraduate Chemistry courses at Harvard University (US).
