I am currently a year 3 student studying in NUS Medicine and I was previously in Hwa Chong Institution for 6 years under the IP Programme. I have been able to perform well in school, achieving NUS Medicine Dean's List in 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 for Phase I and Phase II respectively. In JC, I achieved 90 Rank Points, with As in H2 Biology, H2 Chemistry, H2 Math, H2 Economics, H1 General Paper, H1 Project Work, and Distinction for H3 Chemistry. In Secondary 4 IP, I achieved a Scholastic Mean Grade of 1.27 in Year 4 IP with 8 A1s and 3 A2s. For myself, I like to focus on 2 main principles when studying to ensure I retain the knowledge I learn. These are “Active Recall” and “Spaced Repetition”. Active recall helps with memorising because you are forced to retrieve information from your brain when you think of the answer and this helps information stick. Spaced repetition refers to the act of spacing out your studying in intervals, so each time you re-study information you refresh the information in your brain and over time the information will be retained for longer. I use a flashcard app known as “Anki” to study as it helps me be consistent, and I will share how I use this app to do well and also practice these concepts of “Active Recall” and “Spaced Repetition” to improve learning and retention of information. I also believe that practicing questions are extremely important so we don’t just learn the information but ensure we can apply our knowledge to answer questions in our exam. I have always had a passion for teaching because the process of teaching and seeing my students grow in the process is something I find fulfilling. I hope to be able to help my students in aspects of their academics that they may be struggling with, in the process hopefully impart some healthy habits in these younger students and help them achieve their goals.
