Experience
Current MOE teacher at MOE HQ.
I was teaching at Hwa Chong Institution and now posted to MOE HQ to do curriculum planning and designing of syllabus.
10 years with MOE
More than 17 years home tutoring Sec 1-4 students for Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
My recent student from Sengkang improved her A-Maths from F9 to A2 in her O levels last year.
My very first student was a girl, who was studying sec 4 at Whiteley Secondary School. I just took over her during June holiday. Her results for A Math were much unexpected, as she scored 9/100 for her mid year. She was at the brim of giving up for her O Level A math exam. However, I encourage her not to do do so, though the time may not on our side, we still can make use of the limited time to achieve a better results. At the start, we went through the basic questions to let her understand the basic methods for solving various types of questions. Slowly, we moved on to tackling school exam papers. Eventually, she caught up with her classmates. Furthermore, to my surprise, she even scored the second highest for her whole level during prelim exam. Although the practices had shown good results, she did not get complacent. We then continue to tackle O level ten year series. Through her hard work and determination, eventually, she scored A 1 for both A and E Math.
I am also experienced in tutoring sec 4 N level math and combined physics-chemistry. I started teaching him around July, he will be sitting for his N Level on October. There was only 2 months time left for his revision. The student was studying at East Spring Secondary School; his results were below his class average, especially his math. On the very first lesson I asked for his difficulties, he told me that he was having difficulties understanding algebras. I then gave him some basic examples for practice. However, he did not manage to get any of them correct. I then tried to enlighten him by telling him the key concept for the chapters of algebra. After the first lesson, his mum talked to me regarding her experience towards previous tutors. She told me that, the previous tutor had given up on him, she even advised her not to hire any tutor in the future, since the child is unwilling to study. I replied that everyone is gifted in different ways, as long as he is willing to learn, anything if possible. Soon we started to practice ten year series. However, he was having difficulties in understanding different questions. I then went through the basic questions from the text book and the assessment books. After getting his basics right, we then moved on to tackle school exam papers. We managed to finish a compile of 20 school papers, paper 1 plus paper 2 within one and the half month time. After we finish the papers, I took out the ten year series and let him do as test. The first thing he told me when he opened up the ten year series was the questions seemed to be so simple, whereby he was struggling to solve them when we just started our lesson. After he sat for his first paper, he told me he confirmed will get full mark for paper 1. There was nothing to be surprised as his standard was impressive as compare to our very lesson. I encourage him not to take paper 2 too lightly, as it may affect his result when it comes to the bell curve. He really lived up to my expectation and score A for his N Level Math and Science. His mother thanked me not giving up on him.
I was also tutoring 2 secondary 2 students. 1 of them I started last year, whereby he was having a hard time coping with his math and science. Especially his math, he told me he never passed a single test besides PSLE ever since primary 3. After I took over, he improved his understanding over various science and math topics. During the lessons, he will eagerly ask me different topic related questions to enhance his learning. Furthermore, he showed great improvement in his math. The questions seemed to be foreign language were translated perfectly. I never fail to reward him for having his results improved. Be getting him new stationeries not only reward him for his hard work but also to prepare him for his future challenges. Eventually he managed to get good grades for his end of year exam last year.
I started teaching the other student at the end of March. His attitude was kind of different from other students I so far taught. So I approached him using another method, by analyzing the difficult topic with him, allowed him to grasp the basic concept for the chapter. After he gotten the basic right, I then prompt him with different questions to allow him to brainstorm further so as to allow him to understand more difficult topics. He aimed to be the best in the class, what I can do was to cheer him on and prepare him for the future challenges. By going through the older topics, it helped him to gain his confidence in handling the difficult questions appeared during his class tests. I also enlighten him with extra knowledge as a reward whenever he finished his work with good effort.
In conclusion, I am a very dedicated tutor who is willing to help my students to improve their academic performances. I will go through the topics according to the students’ pace. By doing so, enabled the student to get a better idea of the topics they are learning.
Furthermore, I am willing to spend extra hours without complaining in order to clarify the doubts of my students and getting extra payments. At the end of the day, the improvement of the student is the best reward for the tutor. It is because; I understand the feeling of having results not up to expectations. Not only will the parents be anxious about the poor results but also the students. This will cause the students to get pressurized and if the case were to be serious, it will cause a bad mark in their life.
Being a tutor, not only help the student academically but also morally. By having a good tutoring lesson can help the students to regain their confidence; it also enabled the students to excel in other fields other than studies.
