Experience
-I am an ex-teacher and I started providing private tuition for A level economics since 1998, having 27 years of tutoring experience. My students include those from ACJC, RI, NJC, ASRJC, CJC, EJC, HCI, JPJC, NYJC, SAJC, TJC, VJC, YIJC and MI.
-My students obtained either A or B for their A level exam. Last year, 3 students (from DHS, CJC and RI) obtained an A and 1 student (from ASRJC) obtained a B in H2 economics. They are able to achieve such good grades, sometimes in a matter of 4 months, due to my ability to help students identifying their knowledge gaps and focusing on resolving these gaps effectively, and also their application of the strategies that I taught them in lessons.
- Materials will be provided and student's learning style, based on VARK model, will be assessed and integrated into the teaching materials.
-A scaffolding approach in application of single concept followed by multiple concepts will be done for both case study and essay. This will equip them with the ability to provide in-depth analysis.
-Question interpretation strategy using cause-effect approach and the 3 Cs technique (command word, content and context) to improve student's ability to quickly grasp the question requirements. This will help them to answer the question instead of rehearsing answer.
-Essay content will focus on 4 areas:-definition, concept application, diagram accuracy and appropriate real world examples. Essay structure will be on main theme, analytical explanation followed by answering the question. The PEEL technique that students learnt in school will be applied. Such technique will help them to develop good essay writing skills.
-Evaluation using CLASPP framework will be used to strengthen the evaluative skills. Conclusion either using insights, questioning the assumptions, looking at the effectiveness at different time period, limitations of its use in real life or its effects on different parties based on policy priority to help students examine different policies and issues critically.
-Using all the above, just to cite on example, last year, I started to tutor a CJC J2 student in April. She obtained a D in her J1 promo exam, before tuition. By Sep 2025, for her prelim exam, she obtained a B and this year, she told me she obtained an A for her A level. So significant improvement can be made through the use of effective learning strategies.
