I am a Chinese lecturer at NUS Extension. I worked 6 years full time there, and another 12 years part time till the department closed in 2013. NUS Extension focuses on giving introductory and intermediate language courses for foreign students, and the class helped them to build a strong foundation in Chinese. When I was working part time, I also tutored a few Primary and Secondary School students in Chinese. My recent students were from Nanyang Girls High School and Hwa Chong Institution. In terms of approach, I believe in building rapport and interacting with students, so that they can look forward to lessons instead of dreading them. I believe in a discussion-based class where students can participate, so that they can develop more initiative. Also, I will discuss the deeper meanings of words and phrases, as well as introduce some Chinese cultural practices and values to deepen students’ understanding of their content.

I have been teaching Chinese language at secondary schools and junior colleges for more than 20 years. As a testimony of his ability, he was soon promoted to Subject Head. Besides being responsible for leading a team of teachers and mentoring new colleagues, he was also involved in the curriculum design of school based Chinese language syllabus. As his reputation to come up with innovative teaching methods began to spread, he was soon transferred to the Ministry of Educations (MOE) Curriculum Planning and Development Division to plan on a ministry-wide level. His chief responsibilities included developing Chinese language textbooks to be used for all secondary schools in Singapore. He also worked closely with Singapore Examination & Assessment Board in developing both the GCE O and A level examination papers. During his three-year stint at MOE Headquarters, he gained valuable insights into the development of Chinese curriculum as well as the various forms of assessment modes. Upon completion of his stint, he returned to the schools to continue his passion – which was to focus on teaching and developing instructional materials. He faced the challenge of teaching students who were mostly English-speaking at home and were very weak in Chinese Language. Being effectively bi-lingual, he was able to use English to help his students better and eventually excel in the Chinese A level examination. I have been teaching O level Chinese and Higher Chinese for several years, most of the students I taught at least get B3 and above, also became O level HCL examiner each year. Very familiar in o level CL and HCL syllabus and marking scheme. For home tuition, I taught Catholic high , Dunman high and CHIJ students before.
