I have been giving tuition for about 3 years now, and I have taught students from primary school level to JC level. And currently, I am tutoring a student from NYJC on JC1 H2 Chemistry. From Aug 2019 - Nov 2019, I tutored a junior on H2 Chemistry. He was failing throughout his JC1 and JC2 and has been getting a U, with no interest to study for the subject. After the 2-3 months of tutoring, I was able to pull his grades up from a U to a C at A levels. Since October 2016, I have also been voluntarily teaching primary school kids at CDAC English, Maths and Science. In 2017, the group of students which I taught were able to improve their failing grades to Cs and Bs for their final year school exams. I was someone who climbed from the bottom with S and Us for my exmas in VJC. However, I worked hard and was able to balance my studies and sports, eventually doing well for my A levels. I feel that from my experience of climbing from the bottom, I am better able to empathise with the students' problems and certain misconcpetions that they may have while studying. For me personally, I feel that when it comes to teaching, my style is to motivate and encourage the student rather than just giving the answers.

My name is Jovi Carlin Wong and I have been a GP and English tutor for the last 12 years, and I specialise in helping students come to grips with rhetoric and structuring their knowledge in order to present coherent and convincing arguments on a variety of subjects. In the last 3 years alone, I have helped a number of students jump 3 grades from their starting point to their PSLE, O-Level, and A-Level results. My strength is my ability to understand my students and adapt to their needs. I use a student-centric approach in my teaching, listening to then capitalising on students' own hobbies and passions to illustrate rhetorical principles, thereby enabling helping them internalise concepts. Only when students have understood the fundamentals and gained the confidence to apply them do I diversify into deeper and broader discussions of mainstream social issues. I always aim to produce a positive impact on the students under my instruction and care, preparing them not just for their exams but for life as well.

My teaching method is mainly to focus on concepts taught to the students, but it can be altered to suit the students' needs. I am a firm believer in work-rest cycle, hence I will always have one or two breaks in the lesson to ensure that students have enough time to digest the information and rest before continuing with the lesson again.

I am currently a year 3 undergraduate at the National University of Singapore, with a major in Sociology. I have always been keen on the sharing and imparting of knowledge and skills. Be it initiating study sessions with my friends or going on overseas community service trips to teach children English and Mathematics, I find it extremely rewarding to add value to the lives of others. During my final two years of my International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as well as during the first year of my National Service, I volunteered with the UPSTARS programme run by Ulu Pandan Community Centre to teach primary school children from underprivileged backgrounds. I taught them English and Mathematics on a weekly basis, tailoring lessons to match their learning abilities. I also went through their school work to ensure that what I was teaching was aligned with students' school curriculum, and to reinforce their learning by clearing any misunderstandings or doubts that they might have. To make lessons more engaging and memorable, I utilised learning tools such as toys and even arts and crafts to impart knowledge to the students. Moreover, to conclude lessons, I also taught students about mindfulness as well as tips on how to learn better as a bonus section of sorts. I am a strong believer in holistic education, so on top of making sure students pay attention to their academics, I also make the effort to find out about their hobbies and extracurricular activities to advice them on how to maximise their potential. During the course of the programme, I managed to ensure that the students I taught improved their grades. Most importantly, I ensured that students did not continue to fail. On average, students saw a marked improvement of about 20-30% in their grades for Mathematics and English.
