I'm a published short story writer (UK and SG), ad copywriter, and owner of an online literary magazine. I've been tutoring privately on and off since 2009 when I received my first students; two upper-primary sisters. In the four months we spent together (two 1.5-hr sessions a week), I was able to bring their Ds up to mid-Bs for both Math and English. I've also taught an American fourth grader, Alex, from Oregon when his family had to relocate to Singapore for a job; I have experience breaking expatriate kids in, an often challenging task considering our very foreign curriculum. In our nine months together, Alex saw his initial Ds and Es transform into Bs, with Math and English (his worst subject) reaching high-Bs. I later travelled across the globe over three years and was fortunate enough to have the chance to teach English in countries like Mexico and Nicaragua. In the case of Mexico, I held both classes for primary and secondary school children as well as conversational lessons with working professionals. My profile picture was taken on my last day with one of the five classes for which I was responsible. My teaching style is highly adaptive and engaging, focusing on developing contextual awareness, critical thinking skills, and healthy learning habits that can be applied to other subjects or aspects of the student's life. I start every first lesson with a goal setting exercise and customised learning plan for the student to follow over the course of our journey together. Due to experience, I am especially comfortable with tutoring expat (West) children and foresee no issues engaging with their parents professionally and cordially. Ms Elaine is an experienced and passionate Full Time Tutor who specialises in tutoring lower and upper secondary level students for Science and Math. She has been teaching since she was an SUTD undergraduate in 2015. She has taught students from many local schools, such as TKGS, Temasek Secondary, SACS, Hai Sing Catholic, Dunman Secondary etc. Ms Elaine is well liked by parents and students for her patience and constant encouragement to her students. Through her years of teaching, she has compiled targeted practice questions to help her students grasp concepts quickly. Most of her students generally approached her failing Maths and Science but would see at least a 2 grades improvement by their next major examinations. One of her notable achievements is helping 2 of her students improve from scoring a C6 in the mid year examinations to achieving an A2/A1 for End of year examinations within 4-5 months. She is a committed tutor who believes that each student has the potential to excel and is committed to helping her many students improve.
