Experience
Tan Yan Zhang is a young talented Singaporean pianist, composer and conductor.
Tan received his early music training in piano performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Young Talents. His piano teachers include renowned American Pianist Sylvia Ng and Maestro Josephine Koh (Bosendorfer Artist). Trained as a performer, Tan has performed at venues such as the Esplanade Concert Hall and the NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre, playing solo, with an ensemble, or as an accompanist. He currently holds an ABRSM Diploma in Piano Music Performance (2011). Tan is both a classical and jazz pianist, and is frequently invited by composers to record/perform their new works.
Tan studied Music Composition and Analysis, Direction and Conducting, as well as Harmony and Counterpoint with Local Established Composer and Conductor Tan Chan Boon, a student of music legend Leonard Bernstein. Being a fast learner with a thirst for musical knowledge, he grasped the concepts of harmony and counterpoint quickly and soon began composing and arranging many works for solo performers, ensembles, as well as concert bands and orchestras, under the guidance and tutelage of award-winning composer, Dr Kelly Tang, his current teacher-mentor.
An active and versatile composer, Tan's compositions and arrangements have been commissioned and performed widely by many ensembles and concert bands, such as the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble, the SCSE Quartet, the SMU Symphonia Saxophone Quartet, Ensembles of the Flute & Music Academy (Singapore), the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band and Saxophone Quartet, the Fairfield Symphonic Band, the Crescent Girls' School Symphonic Band, the Mus¢__Ô_æ¢Art Wind Orchestra, the Singapore Armed Forces Bands, and many more, at venues such as the Esplanade Concert Hall and Yamaha Recital Hall (Singapore). Frequently being invited or commissioned to compose/arrange pieces for numerous music groups and events, Tan is highly sought after as a composer. He was recently invited to score the film soundtrack for a short local production.
¢__Ô_‹_A dedicated music educator, Tan was appointed Associate Conductor and Resident Composer of the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble in October 2013. He also serves as guest conductor of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band, where he works closely with Mr Francis Tan Huan Chun. Tan teaches Grade 1-8 Piano & Music Theory privately, and enjoys jazz and film music in his free time.
