Hurdles Faced by Secondary Science Students

Unfamiliarity with the Science syllabus

Students may face a more rigorous study of the topics in secondary school Science, which may result in difficulty grasping the more complex concepts. Students with a shaky foundation in the topics needed to pass their examinations will not feel as confident when stepping into the exam hall. Moreover, students may not have practiced enough with past year papers and may face difficulty in answering the questions and getting all the marks required.

Higher commitments to CCA

In secondary school, students will have a higher commitment to CCA and other activities such as volunteering and classes outside of school. It may be difficult to fit in the time to undertake regular practice with the subject given how busy the student’s schedule has become. Over time, students may also assume a higher responsibility level for these extra-curricular activities.

Heavy workload

In secondary school, the workload for all the student’s subjects will increase, as students are expected to complete a high amount of homework and prepare for their tests and examinations. Students may find it overwhelming to cope with so many different subjects and newer content at once, and may feel stressed when dealing with their academics and attending classes.

Examination stress

Another source of stress for secondary school students is when it is time to prepare for an examination. Not only is there pressure from their parents and teachers, students may face peer pressure, especially in schools with a competitive academic environment. As such, students need to put in their best efforts to pass their examinations with flying colours.

The Importance of Engaging a Secondary Science Tutor

Gradually easing students into the topics of the syllabus

A tutor can gradually ease students into the topics of the syllabus, which will have increased in difficulty since Primary School. The tutor can focus on the topics the student is weak in, while reinforcing and improving the student’s ability to answer questions in the exam. As the tutor will be familiar with the syllabus and style of exam questions, they can provide guidance to the student in answering these questions and getting all the marks needed.

Reinforcing a strong Science foundation

A strong foundation in the subject is necessary for the exam, as the exam questions will often combine a few topics together. As such, students must have a good understanding of the questions and have the necessary background knowledge to interpret what the question is asking for, before writing an answer in a concise manner and showing working where necessary.

Preparing students with necessary exam skills

Answering an exam under timed conditions is not an easy task, as students must navigate a myriad of topics and figure out what the questions are asking for. Students must also learn how to check their answers after the exam to ensure that their answers are presented in the correct way, such as with the appropriate units (which may require conversion). As such, a tutor can help students prepare for their examinations by honing their exam technique.

Helping students manage their time

Time management is a necessary skill, given the average secondary school student’s busy schedules and various commitments. With a tutor, a student will have a designated time slot to allocate for the subject, which could help them get regular practice just in time for the exam. Furthermore, a tutor will support the student’s in-class learning so that they will be more prepared to answer questions in class and during the exam.

Good Qualities of a Science Tutor

Good track record with students of a similar level

A good Science tutor will have prior experience teaching students of a similar level. The reasoning behind this is that similar levels will learn about the same topics, and the more a tutor has experience explaining a certain concept to more students, the more adept they will become at it. A good tutor will have a strong track record so that their students and their parents will have more confidence in their teaching abilities.

Dedication and commitment

A good tutor will have dedication and commitment to teaching, as teaching is a long term commitment which requires a tutor to be present for all the slots he has agreed to take. Students are dependant on a tutor’s guidance, and as such, it is important for the tutor to be committed to the time slots he has agreed to take, and give his best effort to help the student prepare for their upcoming examinations.

A discerning eye

A very important quality of a good Science tutor is a discerning eye, so that they can recognise the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Knowing where the student is lacking enables the tutor to target those areas first so that the student can prepare in time for their next examination. Tutors who are experienced will also be able to discern the student’s strengths and weaknesses, which is useful if the student only has a short time left to prepare for their examinations.

Patience

In studying for any subject, students require patient guidance from someone who is more experienced. It is important for a good Science tutor to be patient, especially when a student is not understanding a particular concept. Tutors need creativity to come up with new ways of helping students understand concepts if the conventional way is not working. Different students learn differently, and a good tutor should understand how each student thinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students in Singapore have tuition?

Approximately 70% of Singaporean students take tuition in some form or another.

Does JC need pure science?

If student wish to enter the science stream in JC, they should take pure science in O Levels. However, students with an A1 in combined science could also enter the science stream.

Is JC easier than poly?

JC has been known to be more difficult than polytechnic courses as the preparation for the A Level examinations is rigorous and highly demanding.

Is it better to go to JC than poly?

If students can handle the rigour of A Levels and they are unsure of what to do in future, an A Levels certificate is general enough to leave the options open for the student to explore different careers. However, if students are sure of a technical skill they would like to attain and there is a specific polytechnic course which teaches them this skill, they could consider polytechnics.

Is it normal to fail in JC?

In some JCs, the tests given to students to prepare them for the actual exam are much harder than the actual examinations themselves. As such, it will be normal to do badly for these tests. However, students should not be too discouraged as practicing with a heavier sword will help them find the actual A Level exams a breeze when they eventually sit for them.

Are JC students stressed?

JC students have a high amount of workload, as well as other commitments such as CCA and other activities both in and outside of school. As such, many JC students may feel stressed and overwhelmed while juggling these commitments as well as their academic responsibilities.
