Experience
I have graduated from Singapore polytechnic with a Diploma in business administration and specializing in logistics and supply chain management in 2011 and currently pursuing a Degree in the same field.
Basically I have been tutoring primary/secondary school students. I feel sense of joy while teaching my students thus I have been tutoring ever since. Time flies and it has already been 4 years since I first taught.
My teaching method and what I belief is the most important is to be able to communicate with the child, only then will the child be able to absorb better as you teach. Communicating makes the learning environment better and makes learning fun and interesting. I don¢__Ô_æ¢t agree to being too strict with the child but there still has to be a minimum of strictness. My students often complement that the tuition is lively and enjoyable.
What I do during the tuition session is to follow the child's syllabus and guide and cater the child in their studies. If the child does not understand the topic I¢__Ô_æ¢ll re-teach and explain to the child in a way that would help him to understand better. I will also cater to his studying individual needs.
When the child is unable to understand a certain question, I would explain in greater detail or using different methods to solve the problem. I too create my own question similar to the question that he has problems with to give him more practice. I¢__Ô_æ¢ll get them do more practices on assessment books to improve on their weak areas as ¢__Ô_Practice makes perfect.¢__Ôï Unless required, I do not always give a lot of homework due to the excessive homework they get now a day.
If the child loses focus easily I¢__Ô_æ¢ll try to incorporate the subject with fun activities. For example; relating subjects to the world, educational games, explaining in a way that funny as this will help to make studying the subject livelier and easier for the child to absorb
A happy student is able to absorb, understand questions, explanations better than one whom isn¢__Ô_æ¢t. As the one who isn¢__Ô_æ¢t tends to shut u out.
I used to tutor 13 students during my days as a full time tutor but had to stop giving tuition due to having enlisted in the army. Following this I joined a company as a full time logistics officer for 6 months. I love interacting with kids hence started giving part time tuition again while doing my degree studies.
CURRENTLY TEACHING 3 students
(First Lesson: June 2011) (YangZheng Primary School)
Xavier now primary 4
Samantha now primary 5
I have been teaching Xavier from primary 1, now primary 4 and his sister, Samantha from primary 2 now primary 5. They are both great kids to work and have been hitting their targets. Samantha has a keen attitude for learning thus it¢__Ô_æ¢s easier to guide her and progress with her. Whereas for Xavier who tends to lose focus easily, I¢__Ô_æ¢ve used interactive games or ways to grasps his attention, this not only makes learning fun but also helps to get his focus and absorb better. If a student is happy while studying, he will be able to absorb better. Samantha has been able to maintain her score of 75-85 for most of her subjects. For Xavier he has been working hard and now able to achieved 70 - 80 for most of his subjects.
Being with them for years, I brought them out with their younger brother several times when they are free and with their parent¢__Ô_æ¢s consent. This is something i enjoy, hanging out with my students outside academics, having fun and games. Just letting lose and have fun. Being a role model and being a big brother.
Often do I tell them ¢__Ô_When it¢__Ô_æ¢s time to study, study hard. When it¢__Ô_æ¢s time to have fun, Let loose and enjoy yourself.¢__Ôï
(First Lesson: March 2014)
Lucas now primary 4
I am teaching a primary 4 boy, Lucas. His attention span is only for the first 45mins. This is quite a challenge as i have to cater to his needs. So i have to wrap up all the critical questions in the first half of the tuition session and leave the easier questions for the second half.
Through the first 3 months, I have been trying various ways with Lucas and have finally settled with a solution to encourage and motivate him to focus and to complete his work diligently by using an incentive system. He is also overjoyed with the incentives that I bring to him. Being happy while studying is the first step of getting good grades as it helps him to absorb, understand the question and explanations. It¢__Ô_æ¢s a win-win situation. With this I am sure we will be able to come to a common understanding and strive for excellence.
Previous 12 Students
(Start: April 2011 ¢__Ô_‹Ð July 2014) (Xing Hua Primary School, Xinmin Secondary school.)
Deyna now primary 6
Dillion now Sec 2
I have tutored a primary 3 girl, Deyna and have tutored a primary 5 boy, Dillon maths back to back (siblings). Since they have a good foundation in maths this I am guiding them to answer and analyse test paper questions set by schools that comes out regularly. By doing this they will be better prepared conquer the tougher questions in the examination. Their Mathematics Grades falls between 78-85% in 2010 through 2013 final year exams and have maintained this grade throughout.
Dillion has achieved his goal of getting a place in Xinmin Seconday school with an aggregrate of 237.
I am no longer tutoring both.
Firstly, Dillion as has too much school activities and it clashes with my studies but i have not stopped guiding him in his studies. He would send me questions that he has difficulties with and i would explain how to do the questions on the phone and via pic art.
For Deyna, Her grades have been affected due to her intensive GuZhen practices. These practices often overlap with her tuition sessions. We have tried to accommodate to these circumstances but it just isn¢__Ô_æ¢t working out due to schedule hence I suggested to the parents to stop the tuition.
BUT I am still standing by her and helping her on the questions she has problems and sometimes popping by her place to explain to her if explaining through the phone still isn¢__Ô_æ¢t clears enough. I am still there to help them achieve their goals
(Start: February 2011 to November 2011 *Due to Army*)(CHIJ ST Nicholas primary)
I¢__Ô_æ¢ve tutored a primary 3 girl, Celest English, maths and science. She achieved a 'good improvement award' in 2010. Her English has improved from grades ¢__ÔÐB3¢__Ô_æ¢ to ¢__ÔÐB2¢__Ô_æ¢ since I¢__Ô_æ¢ve taught her. Remarkably, she scored an ¢__ÔÐA¢__Ô_æ¢ for her Final Year Examination. Maths and science have not been much of a problem for her, she has been achieving high ¢__ÔÐB2¢__Ô_æ¢ and ¢__ÔÐB1¢__Ô_æ¢ for her test and examinations. As for her Final Year Examination she scored ¢__ÔÐB2¢__Ô_æ¢ for science and ¢__ÔÐB1¢__Ô_æ¢ for science. Overall she did exceptionally well and deserved much praise for her hard work and effort.
(Start: June 2010 to November 2011 *due to army*) (Mee Toh primary)
Another girl, Cheryl joined the class, though her grades are weaker as compared to Celest, she has shown great determination to achieve greater heights in her studies. Due to the fact that she always compares herself with Celest, she was able push herself to study harder to improve in her studies. This led her to much improvement in maths and science. She was able to achieve B2 for all her subjects. She has shown great improvement and deserved much credit for her determination and hard work.
(Start March 2010 to PSLE 2010)
I¢__Ô_æ¢ve tutored a primary 5 boy, KaSeng mainly science but due to his weak English foundation I m also guiding him in English to help him to analyse the questions. He used to fail his science with a single digit score but after tutoring him for 5 months he had improved greatly with a score of 58/100
A primary 6 girl jasmine joined the class and I am gearing her up for her PSLE.
¢__ÔÎ
U might wonder why both students are in the same class; the answer is simple, this can help both students as PSLE will cover primary 5 and 6 topics. For the primary 5 student, he will be able to learn something new and be ready for primary 6. As for the primary 6 student, she will be refreshed on the topics learnt in primary 5.
(Start January 2011 to oct 2012)(Bartley secondary school)
I was coaching a secondary 4 boy, Andrew in English, paper 1 and 2 as he prepares for preliminary Exams. His ability to rephrase the answer from the comprehension passage has improved tremendously. Getting him to read composition works from students has helped him to write with more expression.
(Start: March 2011 End: October 2011) (Canberra primary school)
I¢__Ô_æ¢ve tutored a primary 5 girl, Megan English and Maths gearing her up for her semester assessment. Before I tutored her, her maths and English language we both under band 4, after 1 month of drilling (3x a week) she scored band 2 for maths and band 3 for English. This is an achievement not only for me but the student too.
(Start July 2011 End: Oct 2012)(YioChuKang Primary)
I¢__Ô_æ¢ve tutored a primary 3 boy, Bryan, English, Maths and Science. Though his grades fall in the Band 2 range, he is unable to understand the questions in the section c properly, not to mention his ability to manipulate the figures in the question. If this carries on, he would have a huge problem with the core subjects from primary 5 onwards. Knowing his weak points, I¢__Ô_æ¢ve patiently explain and also got him to explain the question for mathematics. I belief that if you are able to explain, this means that you have understood the question. For English I¢__Ô_æ¢ve dedicated time for him to read books after which he has to summarise what he had read. Apart from reading I¢__Ô_æ¢ve also got him to assessment books to polish up on his grammar, vocabulary etc.
(From July 2010 ¢__Ô_‹Ð 31 march 2011)
I have taught a primary 3 and sec 1 Korean girl English, when I first met them, both their grammar, vocabulary, speech were weak but after teaching her for 1/2 a year both have improved and is much literate. For these girls I¢__Ô_æ¢ve incorporated games such as hangman, puzzles etc. To get them to be familiar with the sentence structure, right use of grammar and vocabulary.
(From January 2011 ¢__Ô_‹Ð may 2011) (ST Gabriel primary school)
I have taught a primary 4 boy, Kenneth science and maths. Though Kenneth wasn¢__Ô_æ¢t always getting good grades he had a lively character and a positive attitude for learning. Teaching him was always followed up with fun and laughter making the teaching and learning experience enjoyable.
Above all I will always strive to do my best, help my student achieve their goals and lead by an example.
