Experience
Having gone through the gruelling process of studying for the GCE O level and GCE A Level examinations, I am able to empathize with the difficulties that students face in learning and studying for these subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Higher Chinese and General Paper.
Moreover, having been awarded a provisional MOE Teaching Scholarship to study Life Sciences at the National University Of Singapore(NUS), I believe that this is a form of recognition of my abilities to teach Biology and Chemistry(My Assigned teaching subjects) at the secondary school and Junior College levels, as well as my proficiency in these subjects. In this aspect, I am also able to advise students who are interested in obtaining government scholarships as I have personally gone an through intensive scholarship application process, such as essay writing, psychometric assessment(IQ and EQ test) and a board interview to assess my attitude and aptitude for teaching. Furthermore, during my two years of study in Nanyang Junior College, I have been awarded a edusave certificate of academic achievement and an edusave merit bursary for being in the top 25% in terms of academic performance in the level and good conduct in school. Apart from managing my academic workload, my interest in helping my chemistry teacher with consultations for students struggling with the subject has unexpectedly earned me a letter of recommendation when she heard that I was applying for a MOE teaching scholarship.(Documentary evidence will be provided upon request by parents and students)
On a more personal note, I have also taken part in leadership and study camps organized by Adam Khoo Learning technologies Group, which has developed my character as an individual by shaping my beliefs and mindset to achieve my goals and imparting me with time management and study skills. Thus, I would be able to engage my students in the understanding of concepts and motivate them to master Biology and Chemistry with ease.
With regard to the three other subjects I am providing tuition for (English, Higher Chinese and General Paper), I will teach my students the skills to answering comprehension and summary questions by sharing with them the techniques of tackling common question types that appear in GCE O level and A level examinations. For the essay component, I will guide my students on how to write effective essay plans for different genres, such as narratives, personal recounts for English Language, Higher Chinese and expository and argumentative essays for English Language, higher Chinese and General Paper. In demonstrating my commitment to personally walk my students through these tiring but manageable brainstorming processes, I will personally write essay plans together with my students to let them have a rough idea of how essay plans for each question should look like. I believe that securing an A for General Paper, Higher Chinese and English Language is possible if you put hard work into practising the techniques. If an average student like me can get A, it means that other students have an equal chance of getting an A. It all boils down to having the right attitude and skills.
In addition, having tutored my sec 1 cousin in the integrated programme(IP) who is in Nanyang Girls High School) for two years in English, Higher Chinese and Science, I am able to understand how the IP system works, which will allow me to bridge the gap between students taking the O levels in terms of the difference in knowledge that the students in the IP programme get.
Also, I have tutored her brother for two years from secondary 3 till his O level examinations in Biology, Chemistry, English and Higher Chinese, which made me familiar with the MOE syllabus content and find ways to motivate him when he was faced with difficult concepts and problems. These are the improvements he made from his Secondary 4 Mid Year examinations to his Preliminary Examinations.
Biology: B4 to A2
Chemistry: D7 to B3
English: B3 to A2
With this condensed version of my introduction, I hope that you will be convinced that I have the confidence in helping students steadily improve not only their grades, but their character and attitude towards studying as well.
I will be going to NUS Life Sciences in Aug 2016.
