I am ex moe for history and social studies for 3 years in schools Ju ying and Boon Lay sec schools, I left beginning of 2016.

I also taught IGCSE History to students from ACSi and Hwa Chong international schools.

My aim was to to burn in them a love for the humanities. I had to continually think of ways to make History and Social Studies interesting.

I reasoned that if they loved the subject enough, there would be no obstacle which could possibly deter their learning. That was my aim, this is what educators call 'self directed learning.' For a person to manage and direct learning for themselves, which I believe is the heart of education.

I discuss a lot of themes and try to provide a safe environment for students to think, to talk and express their opinions.

I also wanted to understand their struggles and be there for them in their own personal growth and journeys, as many lacked a strong supportive adult figure in their life.

In many ways teaching students without a good background where they can accumulate prior knowledge is extremely challenging. The lack of rudimentary understanding of basic ideas hinders their ability to grasp the advanced concepts which they ought to know and hinders critical thinking.
