Having a private tutor will give you an upper hand in any subject, there is no question about that, and theory of knowledge is no exception.
But before we dive into how a private tutor can help you with your theory of knowledge assignment let us quickly have a look at what the theory of knowledge is exactly and how it is structured.
1. Is TOK compulsory in IB syllabus?
If you're planning to get an International Baccalaureate diploma in Singapore then you will definitely be required to study theory of knowledge (TOK), as it is mandatory for all students.
It occupies a special place in the IB program, because it helps students develop their critical thinking skills which are crucial in the contemporary workplace.
Theory of knowledge gives students an opportunity to reflect on the nature of knowledge itself. One of its aims is to make students think about how we know, the things that we claim to know.

2. What does the IB TOK course curriculum?
Theory of knowledge encourages purposeful inquiry into different kinds of knowledge and various ways of knowing things. It is comprised almost entirely of several questions.
These questions may include
‘What counts as evidence for something?’
‘What does a certain theory mean in the real world?’
‘How can we judge which is the best mode of X?’
and finally, the most central question probably is...
‘How do we know?’
By answering these questions students develop their critical thinking skills, start appreciating different perspectives that exist in different cultures, gain awareness of ideological assumptions as well as their own personal subjective assumptions and much more.
3. What is the TOK assessment?
Assessment of the theory of knowledge course consists of 1600 word essay plus an oral presentation (which in the year 2022 will be replaced by TOK exhibition).
The oral presentation assesses how well a student can apply to real life situations the knowledge they gained during the TOK course. The new part of theory of knowledge assessment which will be introduced in 2022 and replace presentation is called TOK exhibition.
Students have to choose one prompt, find three objects which are connected to this prompt and explain the connection. The prompt should be selected from the given list and you must make sure that none of your schoolmates have chosen the same objects as you have.
You may present your objects either virtually or live.
In addition to this, during the course student chooses an essay from 6 essay titles that have been issued by the International Baccalaureate. The titles change after each examination.
To give you an example of an essay, it may ask you ‘to what extent does the past shape the areas of knowledge?’ Another essay title may suppose that ‘there is no such thing as neutral question’, and then you may be asked to evaluate this statement.
To many students theory of knowledge may appear to be a rather intimidating course. This is why many students in the past have sought the help of a professional tutor to succeed in their assignment
1. The tutor will tell you in detail about your assignment.
Theory of knowledge assessment is rather peculiar in its nature and some students have trouble understanding exactly what is expected of them. This is where experienced tutor can be of great value.
They can explain in great detail what exactly are the criteria for the upcoming assessment. This will remove the element of unknown from the assessment and make the entire process seeme less frightening.
2. A tutor can advise on how to write the essay.
Writing essays is no easy task to begin with. Even if you are fairly confident that you are able to write a stellar essay in literature or similar subject, the theory of knowledge requires a novel approach to essay writing.
An experienced English tutor will be able to show you how your essay should be constructed, what are the specific criteria that a good essay must satisfy, how you should present your arguments and counterarguments, what is the most appropriate style to be used etc.
In addition, you may practice your essay writing with your tutor, and get their valuable feedback on your written work.
We also have a useful blog post on how to write a good TOK essay.
3. Practice your oral presentation with the tutor.
Even if you don't suffer from the fear of public speaking, oral presentation can be a daunting task, especially if you're doing it individually.
Honing your oral presentation skills in front of your tutor and taking into consideration their feedback will provide you with confidence that you will definitely need when you are doing your oral presentation in front of the examiners.
4. Being asked questions is a good thing.
Since the theory of knowledge is the course that is supposed to develop critical thinking a good tutor will always ask questions that are designed to do just that. So don't be annoyed at the constant stream of ‘how’s and ‘why’s.
These questions will help you gain comprehensive knowledge of the topic under discussion, which is exactly what the theory of knowledge is all about.
5. If you are stuck your tutor will help you out.
Hopefully you will be able to arrive at the correct answer by using logic and determination. However, if you get asked the question and you feel like you are stuck and you don't know the answer fear not.
Your tutor will help you out. An experienced tutor knows the answers that may not be presented in the books.
And even if they don't explicitly tell you the correct answer they will definitely nudge you in the right direction; and if you still fail to arrive at the correct conclusion by yourself, they will explain to you what you should have done and why.
To conclude, theory of knowledge is definitely a tricky course and tackling it by yourself can be difficult even for the best of students.
Having an experienced hand guiding you forward is useful in any endeavour, and in this case it will definitely improve your chances of completing the assignment successfully.
