Many of you are probably familiar with the term creative writing.
But what exactly is it, and what are its characteristics?
Simply put, creative writing is an umbrella term that covers any type of written work that is original and self-expressive.
It is the art of making things up; the art of using your imagination and creating an original story in order to express human feelings, experiences etc.
Another important characteristic of creative writing is that it is not academic in nature.
For example, a research paper or a news article cannot be considered creative writing because the former’s purpose is to report on the scientific findings and the latter aims to impart information that is relevant at the given moment in time.
Both of them should be objective, and written in a formal style. There is no room for creativity here.
The pieces of writing that are included in the creative writing category however are: fiction novels, short stories, plays, poems, movie and TV scripts etc.
Of course all of these written compositions differ from one another, but they all can be included in the category of creative writing because the person that wrote them was using their imagination and creative linguistic tropes to make their work as engaging and as original as possible. Interestingly there are some non-fiction works that may also be included in this category.
These are for instance: memoirs and personal essays. Although these works tell us about real events they may be considered creative because they are not presented in an academic manner.
The author needs to be expressive in order to engage the reader. Moreover, these types of works are often written in the first person, which means that the narration is often subjective.
The authors are using their creativity to present the events from their personal point of view; they are not just laying out hard facts.
In addition to all of this, creative writing is also characterized by such things as: plot development, character development, expressing a subjective point of view, metaphors and similes, emotional language, idioms and figures of speech, dialogues, descriptions of objects or people etc.
Whether you are a professional writer or simply a student working on your assignment knowing how to write a captivating story is a useful skill to have. And it is a skill that can definitely benefit from the right strategy and practice.
1. First of all, you need to understand the subject you are writing about. If you have decided to write about a particular topic you need to gain knowledge about it; this means spending time researching this topic, perhaps conducting a few interviews with knowledgeable people.
The broader is your knowledge the more you will be able to convey to your reader. Painting a larger picture is an integral part of creative writing.
2. Keep a record of all your ideas, because inspiration can strike you at any hour of the day. Make sure to download a notebook app on your smartphone if you don't already have one, and if you're old school and prefer to write things down with a pen then keep a notebook with you at all times.
Don't assume that you will be able to remember everything that you have thought of throughout the day. Make notes, you'll thank me later.
3. Interesting stories typically revolve around tension and conflict.
Who doesn't love a bit of drama?
The best stories involve some sort of conflict which can either be internal (which means that the character is in the opposition with himself or herself), or it can be external (which means that one of your characters is feuding with somebody else).
A well constructed conflict will make sure that the readers keep those pages turning, impatiently waiting to see how it will be resolved.
4. The importance of meaningful dialogue should not be underestimated.
If you're writing the type of story that involves dialogue you’d better make it meaningful. There is nothing readers hate more than wasting their precious time on reading an insignificant piece of small talk.
The dialogue should demonstrate how the characters feel about the events that are unfolding.
Writing a meaningful dialogue is quite hard, because the author should be able to fully understand, and present with conviction both points of view.
In essence, you are debating yourself through your characters, and knowing how to do that effectively is what separates the greats from the crowd.
5. Descriptions can bring your creative work to life.
And well written description will transport your reader's mind to the location where the action is taking place.
However, this is where you need to tread carefully; make sure to include enough relevant detail to paint a realistic world, but not so much that your reader will get bored and start begging you to get to the point.
6. Say it beautifully.
Knowing how to make use of the richness of the language is another skill that will attract the readers to your work.
If you managed to come up with the catchphrase that readers can quote in real life consider it a small victory. In order to develop this skill you need to extensively study the language which you plan to utilise in your writing.
However, do be careful not to use too many cliches.
Remember, in creative writing original way of doing things is the superior way.
Overall, whatever methods you decide to employ in order to improve your creative writing skills remember that your work should always offer something new to the reader.
It’s called creative writing after all, not ‘copy-paste’ writing. When you are engaged in creative writing you are leaving a piece of yourself on the paper. There is nobody else in the world just like you; and what you need to do now is find a way to make the readers see that.
