IB exams for May 2020 cancelled worldwide by Covid-19

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic has affected educational systems worldwide, governments all around the world have closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the global pandemic. According to UNESCO monitoring, over 100 countries have implemented nationwide closures impacting almost a billion students across the globe that have seen their schools close for varied lengths of time.

As an organization, the International Baccalaureate (IB) has also responded to this extraordinary pandemic by deciding to cancel the May 2020 examinations as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates, which is the most responsible and ethical way forward to ensure the well-being of students and educators.

IB officials also stated, “Depending on what they registered for, the student will be awarded a Diploma or a Course Certificate which reflects their standard of work. This is based on student's coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigor and quality control already built into the programmes."

It’s a given that schools and May 2020 students will have many questions regarding the situation that has occurred. Full detail and FAQs will be sent to schools by 27 March 2020 (CET).

IB curriculum is structured in a way not only focusing on academic study, but also on fostering good habits for life and understanding the cultural difference in the world. An IB education enables students to figure out their place in the world and ways to bring about changes. The International Baccalaureate is a world-leading curricular framework that provides students life skills (students develop communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills) to make it beyond academics.

Reasons you should take the International Baccalaureate:

  1. The most obvious point in IB’s favour is that the IB Diploma Program is recognised by all leading universities, which instantly puts you on a worldstage giving you an edge over others.
  2. The IB Diploma is effectively a “university preparation program”, in that it teaches in a more holistic way where students learn skills and ways of learning that will prepare them to do well at a tertiary education level.
  3. In the IB, students are exposed to a much wider range of subjects than they are in other curriculums, which actively encourages students to make the world a better place.
  4. IB programs emphasizes on emotional and social development by getting students involved in activities outside the classroom that helps develop character.

It is “great news” that the exams have been cancelled amid COVID-19 outbreak as it is just unsafe for any student or child to enter into an exam hall with at least 50 other people.
